FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What are the different types of charger?
To keep things simple, there are 3 different types of chargers: 1) Rapid/Super Chargers - These are most commonly found in public charging points where driver's would not spend a lot of time, such as petrol stations and shopping centres. A typical example would be a Tesla Super Charger or Pod Point Velocity Charger. These chargers can typically charge a car from 0%-80% in under 1 hour. 2) Fast Chargers - These are the most common types of chargers for domestic or business premises where vehicles are left on charge for longer periods, such as overnight. They generally are available in 2 variants, a 7kW and 22kW model depending on the electrical supply at the property and can generally charge a car from 0%-100% within 6-12 hours. 3) Slow Chargers - These are a last resort charging solution for your car. They can take 12-24+ hours to charge a car. They are usually a normal socket charger and you should not use them daily due to potential overload of the sockets in your house.
  • What are the differences between manufacturers?
As each of them have similar base functionality, there are some key differences to consider. Here are just a few: 1) Design - a big and clear difference between the manufacturer's charger range is the aesthetics and design of the unit, a key factor when considering how the charger will appear at your home or business premises. 2) Price - generally, the more expensive chargers will have greater smart features and functionality as standard, along with longer warranties and other extras. However, more expensive does not necessary mean better as, depending on your needs, some features may not always be needed. 3) Smart Features - most chargers have similar base functionality, however, your installation may require some specific features to gain the most benefit from the unit. Examples of these can be subsidised costs from your energy provider, solar integration & vehicle brand integration. Check out the chargers we offer for more information about what they offer, but feel free to contact us if you have specific questions!
  • What can affect my installation costs?
There are many factors to consider when looking at the cost of installation. We have comprised a quick list of the most common things to consider for an installation: - Charger cost (single or multiple charger connections) - Upgraded charger feature (warranties, RFID, solar compatibility etc) - Existing electrical circuit condition/capacity - Distance from the fuse board to the charger location - Method of installation (concealed wiring, cross driveway cabling, etc) Our No Obligation Site Surveys are designed to assess most of these circumstances, with you having the opportunity to outline any specific requirements you have, so that we can provide you with an accurate costing for your installation!
  • Can you install a charger anywhere?
In short, no. There are certain conditions that must be met for RBH to carry out a compliant and safe installation. Firstly, it is essential to have a designated parking area, off-road parking or garage for the charger as we cannot run cabling across public pathways. Secondly, the charger must be fixed to a permanent structure such as a wall or mounting post. Also, your charging cable should not cross a pedestrian pathway along the surface (however there is some debate about how to mitigate this issue). These are just some factors that can result in an installation being unable to take place.
  • How long does a charger take to install?
In most cases, a charger takes approximately 4 hours to install with an EV specific consumer unit installation. Times can vary with each installation, and you will be advised on the time to complete the installation when booking your installation appointment.
  • When can RBH Mechanical & Electrical install a charger?
We do our best to agree a time that suits you best for your installation. Some chargers may take slightly longer to be ordered and delivered which can vary in length, this will be outlined to you when booking your installation. Generally, we book installations in approximately 3-5 working days!
  • What does RBH Mechanical & Electrical include in our service?
Everything! Our service includes the cost of the charger, cabling, any supplementary electrical works and materials required with the installation. We also ensure to issue you with all your required safety certificates, including DNO approval once we have tested and commissioned your new charger.
